Portage WI is located between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers in Columbia County. It is the largest city and the county seat. For centuries, Indians, trappers and traders, and settlers portaged their canoes and supplies from one stream to another over the land now known as Portage. The area would grow in fur trading, lumbering and agriculture. The population was 10,662 in the 2010 census.

American Legion State Headquarters and Museum – www.wilegion.org - The museum houses historical relics of Wisconsin's American Legion.

Center for the Arts in Portage, WI - http://www.portagecenterforthearts.com - A former church was converted to a 270-seat theater and gallery which hosts many cultural events. 608-742-5655.

Church Hill District – Just 2 blocks form downtown, the district contains 6 early churches and numerous prestigious homes built between 1855 and 1930.

Fort Winnebago Surgeon's Quarters - www.wsdar.com - Remaining building of the Historical Ft. Winnebago was used from 1828 to 1845, 608-742-2949.

Indian Agency House - built by the US Government for the Indian Agent to the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago). It is one of Wisconsin's earliest homes. The Agency House is open for tours - call 608-742-6362. It was built in 1832 above the Portage Canal located off Highway 33 east of Portage on Agency House Road.

Museum at the Portage - The William L. and Zona Gale Breese home at 804 MacFarlane became in 1996 the Museum at the Portage to display the history of the city. 608-742-6682

Portage Canal, the one and four-tenths mile trail located between the Fox River and the Wisconsin River was marshy and during high water would allow boats to paddle from one river to the other.

Society Hill - The 138 buildings built between 1870 and 1910 with yellow Portage brick were home to the city's early prominent citizens.

World War II Museum - Visit the Portage World War II Museum located inside Esse's Sports World to view artifacts, photos, posters, uniforms and weapons of the war. For info call 608-742-1222.
